About Melitz
Great Jewish education is not about giving simple answers to tough questions. It is about inspiring people to ask the relevant questions that can help them interpret their identity in a pluralistic Jewish world. Melitz programs are carefully designed to provoke curiosity about Israel and the Jewish people. Using sites, sources and creativity, Melitz programs enable people to grapple with difficult issues and transform them into educational moments with long-term impact.
What is Melitz
Melitz has more than forty years of experience working on the seam lines of Jewish life. In the Tanach a ‘Melitz’ is a translator, a person who stands between people with different experiences to help them understand one another. Since 1973, Melitz educators have empowered tens of thousands of Israeli and Diaspora Jews to reflect upon their identity, community and commitment within the context of a constantly changing Israel and Jewish world within wider global contexts.
Melitz’s Mission
Melitz’s Mission is to develop, incubate and implement outstanding informal educational programs for Jews in Israel and the Diaspora in order to:
- Empower individuals to assume active responsibility for defining and refining their personal identities in dialogue with the plurality of Jewish and Israeli narratives that surround us.
- Enhance the personal and communal commitment of Jews to the Jewish people, a Jewish-Democratic Israel and an active relationship between Israel and the Diaspora.
- Enrich the public debate around major issues of importance to Israel and the Jewish people.
Melitz creates innovative educational programs that enable a meeting place between an individual’s personal story and the collective narratives of the Jewish people and Israeli society. Melitz educators embrace a plurality of approaches and offer participants the tools to build and interpret their own Jewish identities and translate the educational experience into active commitment.
